Nokanduis
One of the fastest lefts in the world
To surf nokandui you'll have to learn a few basics. First learn to pump. You need to pump to get speed, and speed is your friend at nokanduis. Second learn to ride a barrel, because there is nothing else to ride here. Then just combine them and you'll grab some of the best waves of your life.
But be aware, nokanduis is a master of trickery. Making a section you'll feel relieved and relax for half a second waiting to cruise out of the barrel. Bang! Another section faster then the one before throws itself over your head. Only one thing to do, pump your way past that section. Bang! Again another section. A few quick pumps let you out and you begin your claim. Bang! Nokanduis throws another truckload of water over your head.
Ozzie Wright has scored a real pearl at nokanduis. 37 seconds in and he drops into the barrel. He just sits there and enjoys the ride with the wave rifleing away ahead of him. Relaxed and in control Ozzie bides his time. A little claim at 49 seconds and he's still deep in the barrel and starting to exit the wave. BANG! A section blasts out in front of him and he has to pump pump pump to finally get out. That's 18 seconds of high speed tube-time.
For a view from the inside of the wave check out Brian Conley get eaten over and over again. Guess it must be hard to pump in the tube while wearing a backpack and headcam. Shame about the slow-mo 'cause this wave screeches down the reef.
This final clip is recent footage of nokanduis going off. The surfers are amateurs and it shows the amount of skill needed to surf this wave well. They start off with some paddle-in then switch to tow-in when the swell rises. Perfect waves crushing surfers.
