Halfpipe Skiing at 2014 Olympics. No thank's!

A while ago the FIS (FIS means fart in swedish by the way) unanimously agreed to ask the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to include men's and women's halfpipe skiing in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

This was most definitely bad news for me. I was really shocked that everyone seemed fine and cool with the news in the skiing community, with comments on different forums like "man that's so cool that skiing is finally recognised" and "yeah this is what skiing needs" but then again all the media highlighted it as something positive.

What the fuck!!!

My opinion is that this sport neither needs more attention (at least not this way), more money or more corporate sponsors. I understand if people like Jon Olsson and Simon Dumont probably totally disagree with me since all they care about is green dollar-bills and their fame. I don't think commercialising freeskiing any further will help the sport in any way. Actually I think all steps in that direction will eventually be a major setback for skiing, snowboarding or any "actionsport" with some kind of soul in it. This doesn't only include the Olympics but also the X-games, Dew Tour and all other corporate branded or owned circuses. Joining the dark force of the IOC and commercialising the sport even further will for sure attract more skiers to the halfpipe and make them buy more skis or boards in a short period of time. But very soon allot of the people that first thought it was cool and did it for the right reasons will think - oh man freeskiing has become so lame and Boom suddenly the people that are the very soul of the sport will give skiing the big finger and be out.

I guess it's the pros, media and leaders of freeskiing that should lead the way and tell the kids in what direction they should go, since allot of us helped to build the whole movement from the beginning. I hate that snowboarding was finally made into an Olympic sport and I love people like Terje and others who dissed the Olympics back in the days! I would love to see some of the skiers stepping up in the same way today!

So why is the Olympics and the FIS so bad? Well all in all, they are interested in one thing- m.o.n.e.y. And they don't give a fuck about your sport, they will make stupid regulations and come up with lame rules and in the end when they have screwed everything up, they will put freeskiing in the same shelf as other lame sports such as ice skating and aerials. Read more about the FIS in my earlier loving story about them.

One of the most positive thing in the freeskiing industry today is when true brands and skiers take matters in their own hands, a god example are competitions like the SCI or the Orage Masters or even the Freeskiing World Tour (even though Nissan is the main-sponsor). I would love to see the freeskiing community come together and create their own tour. Not Red Bull, Monster, ESPN, or any other corporate giant. But Orage, Line, Armada, Surface, Full tillt, 4 frnt and other cool rider driven or owned brands. Join your light-sabres, combine forces for and start a freeskiing/freestyle tour. This is really what the freeskiing community needs now, not the fucking Olympics!

I guess sadly somewhere I might think it's allready to late and that maybe we have all ready lost the battle. But then again I know there are allot of people out there that don't give a fuck about the Olympics and that are not in it for the attention but for the stoke of it. That is what keeps me going and why I keep loving it. So all of you true dudes and dudettes out there, stand up and be heard!!! Don't let your sport be taken over by lame organisations and big corporations. In the end it's what you do and say that counts and that can change things!

Here is what a snowboarder thinks about putting slopestyle-snowboarding into the olympics.

you are a fucking idiot. its not about the money for these guys and girls. sure the sponsorships help them out(look at shawn white for example). but its more about the fame. who the fuck cares who gets the money. people want to see these athletes compete. its another competition for them to show the world that skiing DOES matter. theyll get to compete for their countries. If some rich dude wants for put all his money into creating a new venue like xgames. fuck, let him. thats more chance for the skiers to make a buck, and more chance for us to go watch.

I joined this forum solely to comment on this article. Having half pipe skiing in the Olympics is unquestionably good for our sport FIS BS aside ( and I know how restrictive FIS can be because I grew up racing.

If skiing halfpipe in the 2014 Olympics brings in skiers who love our sport half as much as we do it is completely worth the hassle. And to respond to your assertion that, "oh man freeskiing has become so lame and Boom suddenly the people that are the very soul of the sport will give skiing the big finger and be out."

If you truly love skiing the fact that it has become lame or "over-popular" is a horrible reason to give up a sport if you are truly passionate about it. Skiing is about sharing a unique and life changing experience, even with gapers.

Hey Raf, yeah I know you are up for something with the tour nd that's great! And I dont mind bigger brands supporting it as long as it's the right people behind it! As far as the snowboarding goes I don't believe in any hating from any side. I believe both cultures/sports are the future but i'm afraid of the wrong people beiing in charge that's all! I totally understand snowborders point of view when they say that skiers shouldn't be in charge of the snowboard industry.

Hey Seb, nice text to explain your point of view.
That's for people like you that i try to integrate FIS and see if they able to accept peoples like me, simba....

Your idea of a own tour is already in the back pack for 2 years, the only problem is to find the money for it. The cool/core brands like you said don't have money for it so people needs to go to bigger brands. Core stuffs don't pay in freeski for now!!!

Olympics will be good if FIS turns to be good, actualy many countries (France, canada...) are saying that if nothing change (rules, peoplesin...) they will stop having a "freeski pipe team" so things are moving on.

It is fun when you say "i don't understand people saying it's cool..." cause it's the same speach from the pioneer or older generation but the next generation is interested into it, they want to se how it will work but those kids and teenagers are the futur may be it's good to listen what they think about it and not just to say"it's good for the futur of the sports"

Talk with ya soon about it!!!!

Peace

PS: i don't give a shit about what the snowboarders say, snowboard was the biginning of everything (style, tricks, urban...) but not futur!!!
